Hunger Hits Close To Home The Belen Area Food Pantry helps families in our local community fight hunger. Families facing a variety of financial and social hardships are able to receive assistance with love and dignity. The Problem Is Serious - 1 in 6 families in New Mexico suffer from hunger.

- 8.6% of Americans live below the poverty level.
- Almost 26 million children in America rely on assistance from soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters.
- 29% percent of children under age 12 in the United States live in families that must cope with hunger or the risk of hunger.
The Consequences of Hunger - The hungry suffer from up to four times more health problems than those with enough food to eat.
- Hungry children are more likely to be absent from school.
- Hunger affects mental development of children; they lose knowledge, productivity and brainpower.
